Getting The Most Out of Fold3

Last night I had the pleasure of doing a Fold3 for the California Genealogical Society last night. (Here are the slides!)

And here my favorite infographic for picking the right conflict for your ancestor:

When did my ancestor serve?
When did my ancestor serve?

And make sure you follow the Live Streams from American Battlefield Trust at Gettysburg Live 158! I will be joining Garry Adelman, Kristopher White and others as we tell you tales from the battlefield that happened during those 3 important days in the Civil War.

And check out our new Fold3 WarStories on Fold3 and explore you Civil War in a new way.

Excellent Blog Post from The Legal Genealogist

Every family historian knows that facts matter. We need to get our facts right about our ancestors as well as the world they lived in.
I recommend following Judy Russell for many reasons, but this article really resonates.

Civil War Stories

Civil War Stories

If you know me, you know I have a passion for learning about the Civil War and my ancestors’ stories and experiences from the turbulent decade.

Today we have launched a cool new beta project on Civil War Stories. We have been working with American Battlefield Trust and reaping the benefits of their extensive Civil War knowledge! This first piece includes information on Civil War battles and regiments. The Regiment pages list the battles that the Regiment fought. Ultimately this project will help you find the civil war soldiers in your tree and then discover their stories from the Civil War.
We have been working on this for a long time and I can’t tell you how excited I am that we have the first piece of this live!
You can read more about it here Introducing Civil War Stories! and here: American Battlefield Trust Joins Forces with Ancestry® and Fold3® to Help Researchers Uncover Stories of Valor in Their Family Trees

You can go to Fold3 click on Regiment and start looking at our Battle and Regiment pages!

Wythe County Conference Cancelled

Surprising no one I am sure, the Family History Institute in Wytheville has been cancelled. This is one of my favorite conferences and I am a bit broken hearted, but we have to be safe and flatten the curve.

Stay safe. Wash your hands. Hunker down and break those brick walls.

VGS Day Cancelled

Understandably The Library of Virginia has cancelled all public programming due to the corona virus situation. VGS is looking into doing a virtual conference. More to come on this. Check the VGS site for more info.

Wash your hands! Stay safe. Sorry I won’t be with you on the 18th.

Poetry: Digging Into The Past

My niece and I wandered through Civil War Battlefields, grave yards and court houses last year digging up our ancestors’ past adventures.

She wrote me a poem that I think captures the circular motion of what we do as genealogists.
